RPZD Installation & Backflow Prevention in Wollondilly

Protecting clean drinking water is one of the most important responsibilities in plumbing. Recently, the team at Platts Plumbing Services completed the installation of two Reduced Pressure Zone Devices (RPZDs) at a local caravan park in the Wollondilly region to improve backflow protection and help meet Sydney Water compliance requirements.

What is an RPZD?

A Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZD) is a specialised backflow prevention device designed to stop contaminated water from flowing back into the potable water supply.

Backflow can occur when there is a sudden drop in mains water pressure or an increase in downstream pressure, potentially allowing contaminated water to enter the drinking water network. RPZDs are commonly required where a property presents a high hazard risk.

Why Was an RPZD Required?

This particular caravan park contains facilities that present a higher risk of cross-connection, including hose taps located near sewer dump point facilities.

To improve protection of both the public water supply and the site’s internal potable water system, our team completed the following works:

  • Installed a DN50 RPZD at the property’s main water service to provide containment backflow protection.

  • Installed a DN20 RPZD to protect a potable water hose tap located adjacent to the sewer dump point.

  • Modified existing pipework and valves to suit the new installations.

  • Tested, commissioned and certified both devices.

  • Registered the containment RPZD with Sydney Water.

  • Supplied the client with certification and compliance documentation.

Why Annual RPZD Testing is Important

Unlike many plumbing fittings, RPZDs are testable devices and require periodic inspection to ensure they continue operating correctly.

Annual testing helps verify that the internal check valves, relief valve and pressure zones are functioning as designed. Regular testing also assists property owners in maintaining compliance with Sydney Water’s backflow prevention requirements for registered containment devices.
